Comment from Dr Marilena Tzafettas:

❄️”14 more sleeps to Christmas…” I listen on the radio as I am driving to work, with radio hosts getting excited for the festive season.. But as I arrive and I start listening to people’s stories, I realise that yes it may be Christmas soon but all is not necessarily merry and bright for everyone. This has also been highlighted by the National Institute of Health which has reported Christmas to be a time of year with a high incidence of depression. WHY PEOPLE EXPERIENCE DEPRESSION DURING CHRISTMAS: 📌Social media. A “perfect” Christmas tends to be portrayed adding pressure on individuals to live up to that standard, which most of the time is not a realistic representation. 📌Poor diets. Increasing levels of alcohol that are often consumed during this time of year can exacerbate existing mental health symptoms. Over-indulgence in food and sugary treats can cause sudden drops in energy levels which are associated with a drop in mood as well. 📌Lack of physical activity. During Christmas people tend to spend a lot of time sitting around instead of getting active in the gym or taking a walk outside. Lack of exercise is greatly associated with low mood. 📌Expectations to be happy and have a good time leads those struggling with depression to feel isolated and even “guilty” at times for feeling this way, leading to further withdrawal. 📌Financial strain. Pressure to spend lots of money on gifts leaves many people who are trying to live up to the standards of their social environment – even when they cannot afford it - riddled with anxiety. 📌Excessive rumination. This is the time when a lot of people will excessively reflect on unattained goals or perceived inadequacies in comparison to others thus leading to a self-defeating mentality and low mood. 📌Loss. For those who have lost a loved one – whether recently or in the past – the festive season can be particularly challenging as they are reminded of their loss and this is associated with feeling sad and low. #mentalhealth #depression #anxiety #seasonalaffectivedisorder #christmas #psychology #lowmood #festive #wellbeing #expectations #melancholia

Gm...belief in you is the source of success. What you say and take action on creates a reality that is either a blessing or curse. Your dream is your dream. The passion in which you purse your dreams will generate a youthful energy that will allow you to defy what is "physically," possible. I believe in The power of YOU...so should you. I love you with HIS love and pray your strength. #fitness #fitlife #mentalhealth #psychology #goals #ocr #work #dreams #success #atlanta #florida #millionairemindset #teamwork #vision #age #selfcare

Sometimes we forget that for the first 2 decades of our lives, our teachers, caregivers, and even the right cartoons were sending messages rich with wisdom to take with us into adulthood. Master Splinter, Yoda, Winnie the Pooh, and so on are just caricatures of real philosophers with real lessons to soak in. A Tuesday challenge might be to reflect on those hidden insights in between kicking bad guy butts✌️
