Some day I'll look back on this time of my life and be glad that I'm cutting back to spend more time with these two special kiddos. I love photography but I'm being called to a greater purpose. If you haven't heard the news click the link in my bio to read all about it. 📸 by @danycphotography
These past two weeks I've been exploring the word "identity" with my high school group of girls. It's a tricky term as we never truly know who we are because it's something that constantly changes and evolves. One thing I know for certain is that I was created with a bigger purpose and labels do not define me. I look at my bio for instance. Yeah those are things you most often find me doing but who I am is someone who wants to serve and be present in life. So for now I'm telling you that you are enough. You don't need labels. It's been a crazy month here in Michigan. It felt like Summer hit us and then fall came in an instant. It's times like this that make me reflect on how I've handled change. Through the many different events in the last 9 years one thing has remained the same. I've always relied on my photography business. I have built it from the ground up so It hasn't been easy or cheap. This past year I have had the best time exploring what it's like to go full time and take things to a standard of excellence. I've probably learned the most I ever have. I've often wondered, what does this mean? I'm dumping endless hours into a business I love but for what purpose? Well the purpose is to tell stories. Stories of how others have come together or explore life. It's been an honor to be a part of all of this. I've really done some soul searching since June and it has been revealed to me what God has in store. He has created me to do bigger things to honor his kingdom. This is why, with a heavy heart I tell you that I will be officially ending Kara Hanes Photography Dec 31, 2017. 📸 Photo of my first and last session KHP ⚠️All questions answered on the link in my bio.
Listening to laughter is so contagious to me and it's one of my favorite things to do with my clients. I will do anything to make someone laugh. If only you could see me on the other side of this lens 🙈. This is what turns clients in to friends. Today I'm sharing the Moseler family with you. I've been taking their photos since their kids were little and they are sure growing up fast. What is your favorite thing to see in a family session?
This morning I'm just staring at precious little Brooklyn in this photo and thinking back to those sleepless nights but those wonderful moments of snuggling with a little one. How was your Monday morning going? Are you wishing you could crawl back in bed and take a couple more 💤? (Check out more from this session on the blog by clicking the link in my bio)
Happy Saturday!!! This is usually where I tell you something amazing but instead I'm going to just leave you with a beautiful photo of the sweet Samantha Impens while I sip more coffee and binge watch tv and do nothing at all. Enjoy your day friends! (To see more photos from this session visit the blog. Link in my bio)
Some of the people who have helped me become who I am today were those who listened and gave advice for my best interest. They didn't gossip or complain they told me the straight up truth even when I didn't want to hear it. This little guy Sawyer shares some of these same people in his life. His momma and Noni. I'm thankful for people that can be there for me. Who were or are those people for you? (See more photos of the Rose family just like this by visiting the blog. Link in my bio)
Julie Andrews may have forgotten one thing, some of my favorite things are the crinkling sounds of leaves in the fall. Don't you just love the smell of this time of year. The weather hasn't quite made up it's mind yet but today was the first day that I felt fall had finally come. What are some of your favorite parts of fall? See more from the Poll family session on the blog tonight (Link in my bio)
6 years ago I began mentoring teen girls. This was something I really had to train myself in. 7th grade was one of the worst times for me. I'm glad that someone nudged me to do it and I haven't questioned my decision since. 🎓 . . I was her mentor through our church and she and I just clicked. After all these years Ceirra has grown in to the the most beautiful of young women. When talking with her months ago she had completely different plans. The beauty in this is that there is so much space for finding who you want to be. Currently Ceirra plans to go to college and study Humanistic Physcology. She is passionate about spreading positivity – “People can be cruel, we need more people spreading “Good Vibes” instead of hurt”. . . I can’t wait to see where her journey takes her. What was or is your plan after high school. What are you doing now? Check out more photos from this session in my blog. Link in the bio.
These girls are a huge part of my world. I began mentoring them a couple years ago when they were little 6th graders. This year they are Freshmen (what? 😱) I am honored that they allowed me to tag along during pictures for their homecoming dance last week. I almost forgot to mention that today is @bitterice_112 birthday 🎉 will you wish her a good one? #hoco2k17 #daybreakhsyouth #flooddaybreak
I am on the mend today and ready to tackle the world. Two weeks ago (when it was still warm) The Clark family and I got to listen to the waves and watch as their boys jumped from the dunes and splashed in the water. Hey there! Kara here. It's easy to show you beautiful photos that I see all around me but today I'm showing the girl on the other side of the lens. I'm not perfect. The old me would have been scared to share a photo of me without cropping this size 14 waist. But I'm showing up today imperfect and untouched. It's crazy how society makes us feel unworthy and comfortable to be ourselves. When looking at this photo I thought to, "Oh girl, your curves are making a statement" but when I step back, I think of the journey and how they came to be. I think about how I had the honor to carry two beautiful babies when others long to do that very thing. I'm working on loving this body and showing up just as I am. Double tap if you believe confidence is hard but it's worth pursuing. 🙌🏻
Sunday nights mean packing lunches and realizing the kids didn't do their homework (oops) it also brings on a case of the Mondays. How do you prepare for the week ahead? 📷 @jennakutcher
"Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin." -Mother Teresa What if we put our worries aside and only thought about what we could do in this very moment to reach full potential? Isn't it crazy that our "to-dos" are what hold us back. What is one thing you're hoping to accomplish today? 📷 of the beautiful Hannah Walters who just went live on the blog. Check it out. FRI-NALLY am I right? I just love Fridays. This time of year they remind me of football games and hanging with friends. They also promise sleeping in on Saturday and waking up on a crisp cool morning, coffee in hand ready to enjoy a day off. What do you like to do on your Friday night? 📷of the beautiful @morganlemieux25
📷 Pro-tip: Before your session, pack a bag with snacks, water and any small objects (like toys or lollipops) that might help me get their attention when it’s time for them to look at the camera. If they are old enough to understand you, it’s a good idea to prepare them for what’s to come before the session starts. Explain how much the photos mean to you so they know to be on their best behavior. A lot of families discuss and pick something fun in advance as a treat after the session if they’re good listeners, like an ice cream cone🍦, for example. It also helps if their bellies are full and they’ve has some good rest beforehand. Once you prepare them physically and mentally, then feel free to give them (and you!) grace! They’re little, and I know that some days don’t always go as planned. I’ve seen it all and will make sure to get you great photos, regardless of their moods. My goal is to make this as fun and stress-free as it possibly can be for you and your family!⠀ ⠀ For more tips like this one, download my FREE Portrait Session Style Guide for a stress free experience. It was a cold winter evening. We were celebrating 4 years of being together. We walked to this bridge with only the moon and twinkling lights to guide us. As we stopped in this very spot, He handed me a card. My eyes skipped everything printed and I read his handwriting that said, "Will you marry me?" 7 months later we said "I do" and Sept 2, we celebrate our 11th anniversary. This photo explains our relationship pretty well. I'd say that so far it's been the best one yet. Here's to many more babe! 📷 by the incredible @katiecookphotography relive our wedding day with us by visiting my story.
